We head to Lake Malawi today. Breakfast at the B&B. I tried to pay my bill with credit card
but it didn't go through.. I phoned Australia ..the card company said not their problem..
It happens a lot in Africa.. cash is king.
Getting out of Lilongwe is a nightmare. Takes over an hour - bikes, motor bikes, mini vans taxis, cars, trucks and buses.. what a mess.
Eventually we're out of town .. but even here hawkers everywhere.
Everyone who can work does..mouths to feed
I get pulled over for speeding.. yes they did have a camera..and I get fined about $20.
But I've got used to this.. I empty my wallet ..have less than $5 in it
"Good morning officer, how are you"..hand out to shake his.. "You were speeding" "Really!"
"I must punish you" "can you just give me a warning" "No $20" in Malawian Kwacha.
I open my wallet a show a few Kwacha.. "Can I pay by credit card" I know they don't have the ability. "If you give me a warning I will spend money in the next village" The officer chats to his superior.. I get a warning. Used this approach a lot of times ..worked 90% of the time.
Humour also works..
Before the officer starts his speel.. "Good morning officer, how are you, can you tell me how far it is to Monkey Bay" " about 120 kilometres" "Oh! that's good only 30 minutes away"
Much hilarity amongst all.. the joke is shared amongst the other cops.. and we're on our way.
The mountain pass down the escarpment is impressive. On the way I see this stall.
Land rovers ,Toyotas, cars, planes , bikes
I buy a Toyota similar to mine. I don't bargain here they are desperate.
Milling the traditional way
We get to Monkey bay at 12 and refuel and head to Dome Island ..take the boat across at 3.00 pm..We have got a tent under cover ..basic but comfortable enough.
Only one other couple on the island..
Good dinner - chicken curry.
