September 25th Nanyuki to Moyale Ethiopia.

George Clarke

Updated: Jan 5, 2020

Five to Ten years ago this was one of the dangerous parts of a C2C journey ..Bandits near Moyale hassled and robbed motorists..and the road was dirt..bad dirt! Now it's a lovely tar road, little traffic and could be quick without the humps and road blocks.

I set off early. After a few hours the rich farm land gives way to a much dryer region.

Yes this is Kenya arid semi desert

Noth Kenya near the Ethipian border. Houses

There is a noticeable Kenyan military presence as I get closer to the border.

It gets dryer ..

Camel herders in Kenya.

This dry desert territory is Kenya.. I couldn't believe it.

Colourful Kenyan woman.. I never thought that this image would be Kenyan

Says it all

I'm hoping to get through the border tonight..and am moving fast. Getting low on fuel and Kenyan money. the border towns both use the same name. Moyale Kenya..Moyale Ethiopia. I get to the Kenyan border at 4.45pm plenty of time (closing time 6pm). The Kenyan customs guy is fast and the carnet helps. Get to the Kenyan immigration at 4.55pm..No one in passport control.. all gone home.. what to do? ..Spoke to the guy locking up the building

and who said.."Come back in the morning" "What time does the border open" I ask

" 6am, but don't come before 8.30" he says "they come late!"

I bite the bullet and head for the Ethiopian side.. They are open and thorough.. checked my movements in the last 14 days. Heard I'd been in Tanzania. There was/is an Ebola scare in Tanzania..so a form to fill in and my temperature taken..Then to passport control (quick) and customs..also thorough..

They are the first to question the fact that the car is not registered in my name.. and do I have permission to use it. I give them the affidavit and I'm on my way.

Ask the border officials for the best hotel in Moyale Ethiopia.. they point it out and I go. Find the hotel and there are plenty of UN and Red Cross vehicles parked here ..so i figure it must be OK.. I soon find out that its their drivers digs.. I check the room - it's been recently painted, sort of clean, and has a warm shower ..I take it for A$30..Checking that they take credit card..No problems.

Have a shower and get a meal..ordinary.. a couple of beers and bed ..Of course I get the runs - not really badly, but enough for me to walk in a funny way.
