September 24th Nairobi.. to Nanyuki

George Clarke

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

So off to the Sudanese embassy at 8.00am - the traffic is unbelievable and there is no courtesy - every man for himself. He who hesitates is lost.. I don't want to ding my car

but have realised that if I don't drive as the locals do, i won't get anywhere!

Get to the embassy at 09.00 (opening time according to their website). Told by the guard opening time is 9.30, so I wait.. At 9.30 I get the form filled in, a different blood group this time. And I wait ..a woman who works for the U.N. arrives to get her pre arranged visa... she has to fill in the form. We wait and chat ..

Nairobi is the hub for the U.N. and hundreds of N.G.O.'s. Many thousands working for these organisations are living in Nairobi. She is off to Sudan to do some work for the U.N.. After 10.30 the official arrives ..the woman is attended to first.. she has to pay and hand in her passport for a pm pick up.

My turn.. "get visa in Ethiopia".. end of matter!

Nothing else to do, so lets head north towards Ethiopia - change money and I'm off.

The great north road is quiet and I make good progress. Heading for Nanyuki just north of the Equator. The country side is great farming land ..Mount Kenya appears to my right, but it's a little cloudy..

Mount Kenya about 60 k's away.

Look at this lovely farm land... Yes these are green houses. There are many more like this.

So who can guess what is Kenya's second largest export? Flowers... Tea being the first.

I get to Nanyuki at about 4 and check into a hotel. At dusk I take a motor bike to a local pub

for a beer ..a big place ..at 7.30 a disco and the place starts to hum..

The British army has a training camp here, about 400 British soldiers training the Kenyan army.

But I'm hungry and want to go back to the hotel.. call a motor bike.. The pubs security steps in and tells me not to go on that bike..as they don't know the driver.. I wait a short time for a "safe" bike.. Have Ugali and beef stew .. I didn't realise that this would be my last Ugali.
