September 1st Drive from Sth. Luangwa to Lilongwe

Updated: Jan 6, 2020

This should be an easy day drive.. Left at a reasonable hour into Chipata, refueled

and headed for the border. Zambia and Malawi.

All blogs I had read advised that African border crossings were slow..

But so far they have taken about an hour to get thru both sides.

Today is no different. I think the carnet has made the difference.

I had never been to Malawi, a new country for me, that makes 82 I've visited.

Malawi is poor, very poor - depending on the source of information, up to 70% of the population lives below the poverty line..That is less than US$1.90 per day. And you can see it the moment you arrive.. Kids and adults have no foot wear and clothes are ragged. It's a tough life in Africa.

In the first village, I stop and pick up a sim card. It takes about an hour..no security though ie passport checks etc.

Arrive in Lilongwe, capital of Malawi at about 2pm seems to be an organised town. Clean

I have chosen a B&B the address is area 45.. Lilongwe is divided into areas with each house or plot having a number in the area.. I ask a cab driver for directions and find area 45.

Spent an hour and a half trying to find plot 879 where the B&B is.. nothing.. and they don't have a phone number. Eventually google a different establishment and head off in a different direction..this one easily found.. Was told that Area 45 had an old and new section ..I was looking in the old section.. silly me!

Have dinner at a local restaurant.. notice a lot of Indians, shop keepers.
