September 19th Dar to Mombo

George Clarke

Updated: Jan 4, 2020

Today I had hoped to get to Same and decided to leave after the rush hour. Started moving at 9.30.. The traffic in town was ok but the first 100 kms out of Dar was shocking ..It took 3 hours so that put me back a bit. That's how it is in Africa!

When I could, I got a move on and of course got caught for speeding 3 times.. Paid one on the spot fine and talked my way out of the other 2. Score 17 charges paid 5 fines. The fines aren't much today the fine was A$13. The traffic cameras here are fixed and send the photos to the cops in the next town. They stop you show you the picture and the speed and you are done. But often the camera is on the 50kph cancellation sign when you are coming out of the town .. As soon as you see this you gun it and ..you're caught!

The road north is close to the Kenyan border - a beautiful part of the world with a big mountain range and large agricultural areas.

really pretty ..pics don't give the real beauty.

This range went on for 100kms

The drive was interesting. Mango trees everywhere, wheat and maize, and sisal in the drier areas.

Sisal for 40-50 kilometres at least

The sisal fibre is used for mats, baskets and rope. The fields are beautifully maintained

There is a factory to process the crop in the middle of these plantations.

.

School girls walking home after school..I did ask permission but one got shy.

Because of the slow start I didn't make it to Same so stopped at Mombo for the night.. found a room: clean, a bed, cold shower. Cleaned up and wandered into town for a beer.

Fruit sellers in Mombo waiting for the next bus to hawk their wares.

The lads having a game of pool at Mombo my overnight stop

How they keep this level is amazing.

These guys are motor bike taxis..I've seen 4 on board 3 pax. and the driver

Bread seller

Goat on the Braai..BBQ.. looks good, smelled better

So it's local fare tonight.. Ugali, (maize meal in a stiff porridge eaten by all south of Ethiopia).

goat meat, a vegie stew and a Kilimanjaro beer to wash it down.

All this for A$4 plus the beer A$2.

A good healthy meal.
