Aug 10th North Moremi

George Clarke

Today is a moving day.. a short drive from Kaziikini camp to the community camp at

Mababe.. road is bad but i'm getting used to that.

Camp set up at Dijara.. Sunset

Arrive midday and set up camp.

Facilities are poor ..no water on arrival ,toilets don't work but the camp manager

soon starts the pump and I get water.. from a branch of the Khawai river which is now receiving water from the Okavango delta.

Tonight (Saturday night) there is much excitement in the village.. There is a talent show, arranged by the provincial government in Maun. A team of judges from Maun has arrived with a D.J. .the high school kids are going to strut their stuff.

I decide to go.. and give a lift to the camp manager and his friend..the venue is the community hall in Mababe a village of 500 or so. No electricity here. The generator at the hall won't start so someone rushes off to borrow a generator from one of the locals ..the show gets going 2 hours late. While waiting I'm introduced to teachers ,the local policeman

and many others.. I'm the only white..

The hall fills up ,the D.J. is grinding out the loud music, kids are dancing, it's all fun.

The show starts...

Between the contestants ..the audience is dancing and having fun..

A couple of boys arrive drunk ..but the Policeman and a few others quickly sort them out with little fuss.

The audience scream as each contestant arrive..drowning out the LOUD music

A great night is had by all.

I head back to camp with the camp manager.. and his friend.

Sleep at last until about 2 and then the Hyenas howl and the lions roar..
