26th July Cape Town

George Clarke

Updated: Jan 5, 2020

Zoe arrived last night late. She had stuffed up her tickets..

Today is a glorious day.. crystal clear sunny and warm.

We slept in big time..

The night manager at the hotel we are staying at is

worried about the car being broken into at night ...It's parked in the street because it's too high for the garage. I went down early to check.. but all OK .

After a lovely breakfast at the B&B Cape Riviera it was shopping for Zoe and a car wash for me.

but as all the car washes are in shopping centres

and the height limitation was 2.1 metres ..wasn't possible.

At lunch time we had a visit to Groot Constancia wine estate.

The original winery in South Africa was established in 1685.. a little bit before the Australian industry started. In fact Groot Constancia is the oldest wine estate in the southern hemisphere.

The stables at Groot Constancia now a restaurant

Note the Cape Dutch architecture - ornate gables and white walls of all the buildings.

The main house at Groot Constancia

Then after the obligatory tastings - very generous - it was off for a drive on the Atlantic side of Table mountain

The back of Table Mountain with the peaks known as the 12 apostles

Hout Bay, Camps Bay, Sea Point, Green Point - all so nice and clean.

The major hotels are at the waterfront. The Cape Grace, the One and Only and the Mount Nelson are the three most famous..

The Mount Nelson is the old colonial hotel away from the water front A few weeks ago two Ute loads of bandits (15 of them) drove into the hotel knocked down the guard and robbed everyone at dinner with AK 47's pointing at them.

The next picture is of Bokaap.

This is an area where Malays were allowed by the Dutch East India Company to build their houses. The company ruled the Cape with an iron fist..and were not liked by the slaves and imported workers from Malaya. When they built the houses, they had flat roofs and were multicoloured as a form of protest and to distinguish them from the whitewash and gables favoured by their oppressors.

Another scene in Bo kaap

In the evening had dinner with Uli and Luanda and their two sons..A great night..
